Leprosy in Hindi is called Kusth Rog, Kusth Rog used to be there in India long time ago and it is caused by, you know, first bug name is same as Mycobacterium tuberculosis, but it’s very different from, I mean, but this bug is not, not, but it’s Mycobacterium leprosy and in distinction from tuberculosis, this is very, it’s not easy to get.
You have to be, I mean, you, once again, you get the infection to the droplets, but you have to be in contact with the leprosy patient for a long, long time before you will get leprosy. This bug is not very contagious and we used to see that in India, when we going to medical school, we were aware that they have leprosy and, but nowadays I don’t see it in either in India, neither in US, obviously not. So we cannot get leprosy by shaking hand with a leprosy patient.
We have to be in contact again and again for a long time. And it is through the breathing and through the infected droplets by the, by the, by the Mycobacterium leprosy, which is the bug for leprosy. Well, if you do the research on the leprosy, I mean, according to the literature, it says it takes three to 20 years to develop leprosy.
It’s basically a skin condition. And, you know, you see, we used to see that back in India, you know, these, these pale color patches on the skin. So it also, you know, affects, I mean, you lose your sensation in your hands and in your feet.
It thickens the skin on the face, on the extremities. It can really cause physical deformities, which can be crippling. And for both for hands and for toes and there’s a sensory loss.
And sometimes, you know, even vision is affected, you go blind. Immuno have treatment available and a number of medicines we combine together for the leprosy using the antibiotics. And usually we use a combination of antibiotics like rifampicin, ipsum D, EPSOMD, PSOA and dofazimine or clofazimine.
Treatment is very, very effective. That’s the reason I think we know that India’s financial situation dramatically improved. We don’t see leprosy patients in India on the streets anymore.
Also, it is important to know that the top medical body, the international medical body like WHO or other health agency, they provide the medications for free. There is a public health issue. We can diagnose it early, we can prevent all the complications, we can prevent all the disability.
And in this day and age, there is no reason for leprosy to continue with all the treatment and resources available. Once again, you know, all said and done, I wanted to tell you that we used to see leprosy in India 20 years, 30 years ago. Whenever I visit India now, I don’t see it in US.
Obviously, I have not seen a case of leprosy. All the people are aware. So same thing, my colleagues have not told me in India, if there are any cases of leprosy, which is good news for us, all of us.
